PhD; Principal Investigator; Associate professor, at Erasmus MC-University Medical Center Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
After completing his PhD research on hepatitis C virus at Erasmus Medical Center in 2012, Dr. Pan started to establish his own research group at the same institute. He initiated translational research of hepatitis E virus (HEV), which was a neglected pathogen at that time. His team has dedicated to establishing liver organoids-based innovative HEV models, understanding HEV-host interactions and developing antiviral therapy. Dr. Pan founded the Global Hepatitis E Platform (https://www.ghep-hev.com/) to engage multi-stakeholders to advance hepatitis E research, education, public health and patient care, aiming at benefiting both the infected patients and the society at large. His outstanding contribution to the HEV field has been recognized by the prestigious Emerging Leader Award (2021) from the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). His group also work on fatty liver disease and liver cancer. In response to COVID-19, his team immediately initiated coronavirus research taking multidimensional approaches; and currently his team is embarking on mpox research in response to the 2022 multi-national outbreaks. His portfolio on translational research of liver diseases and emerging viral diseases has led to important societal impact and over 230 scientific publications
